Response to "Lost Consciousness"

Like Missy, I was also very interested by the contrast between feminism in its first and second waves and today’s very different concept of feminism. This was a movement, which once represented powerful women asserting their rights for equality. It does make some sense that the stereotypical feminist persona morphed with the changing of times; however as Ariel Levy points out, we seem to have regressed into a sexual “liberation” movement that barely resembles feminism in its pure and original intent. In this female chauvinist pigs movement we have women who strive to emulate the Playboy bunny ideal of ‘simple’, ‘shy’, ‘young’ and ‘never sophisticated’ and then go as far to call their self-imposed sexual oppression “liberating”. Missy’s quote about lost consciousness is extremely relevant to our discussion of changed feminism. We truly have become desensitized to the countless ways in which Playboy bunny culture has permeated society.
